Hitting the Links, A Family Affair
July is more than just fireworks, barbeques, and lazy days. July marks family golf month sponsored by PGA of America. Playing golf is unique to other sports because you can walk, talk and play at the same time. It is a great opportunity to have some fun on the course with the people you love.
Top Five Reasons to play golf with your family in July…
5) Enjoy the beautiful weather and the outdoors.
4) It is probably better than family game night.
3) Organize a tournament with your family and get those competititive juices flowing. Offer incentives for the longest drive, closest to the hole, and straightest shot.
2) Take sibling rivalry to the course with a friendly competition. Who knows? You may become a long drive champion.
1) On a golf course you can escape to the beach, ocean, jungle, and the rainforest. Technically we would call these the bunker, water hazard, or the punch-out area, but during family golf, it is necessary to use your imagination.
There are other ways to make golf with the family an enjoyable experience. Night golf is sometimes offered throughout the summer. You will be equipped with glow in the dark balls and flashlights to meander your way around the golf course. Advantages to this are that it is dark so it makes it easier to become invisible if you are a beginner who is self conscious. Also, playing in the dark is challenging for all players, so it equals the playing field.
Again, if you are just starting to learn the game, play in a scramble and have everyone hit their shots from the best position continuing on throughout the course.
Or, try an alternate shot format; find a
partner and take turns hitting each shot.
Whether you are a first-time player or the most advanced player, summer golf with the family is not a time to stress about your game or what is going on in your life; it is a time to enjoy one another’s company and make some fond memories. Laugh at the bad shots, embrace the good ones, and keep coming back for more.
